If your talent is in design, there are several things you can do for some quick cash. While there is a lot of competition in the field, there isn’t a lot of quality work out there. So you can make a lot of money if you do good work and price reasonably.
Freelance Design
Freelance design is the most obvious choice. Whatever you are good at, you can offer. Some good ideas include:
• Blog design
• Minisite design
• Ecover design
• Banner design
• Logo design
• Website design
I would avoid most of the standard freelance websites if you’re in a hurry to make money. Most of them will take you a while to get work, and payment is sometimes through a type of escrow system, which could take days or even weeks to release the funds.
Instead, I would look for work on various forums. You can place a link to your design portfolio in your forum signatures, as well as placing ads on sites like Digital Point, SitePoint.com, and Warrior Forum. You may also be able to find design work in your local area. Check your local Craigslist to see if anyone is searching for a designer, and you may also consider placing an ad there yourself.

You might try entering contests in your spare time. Many contests pay $100 or more, so if you happen to win, you could get a nice chunk of change. These are usually paid for very quickly if you win. One trick is to search for contests that are ending within a day or two. Look at the entries that have already been submitted. Find out what the client thinks of them (what they’ve been rated, and the comments made), and try to make something similar, but don’t copy.

If you’re good at building websites or blogs, you might consider building them and selling them. This is called “flipping”, and it’s become extremely popular over the last few years. First, it is critical to understand what is selling and what isn’t. Browse sites like Flippa.com (the world’s largest website flipping marketplace) to find out what type of sites are selling, and which niches are popular.

Be sure to make a note of the average sale price, and what is included in the auction. You want to be certain you’re competitive. Remember, you’ll have to have a little upfront capital to invest in flipping. It costs $19 upfront to list a website for sale on Flippa, and then you must pay a 5% success fee after the sale, too. Plus, you have to pay for the domain name for the site, and hosting for the duration of the auction.
If you need money to get started, you might consider selling some articles on Digital Point or taking a little freelance work to get the capital you need.
